Five-axis in a five-axis machining center is generally the ability of an index-controlled machine tool to move a part or tool simultaneously on five different CNC axes. Standard 3-axis milling takes place on the X, Y, and Z axes. These three linear axes are the directions in which the main axis or the part (depending on the machine) can move: X axis: left to right, Y axis: front to back, Z axis: up and down. Five-axis machining centers also use two axes of rotation: A, B, and C. A axis: rotate around the X axis, B axis: rotate around the Y axis, C axis: rotate around the Z axis.

Different machining equipment will use different combinations of axes (A and B, B and C, or A and C), each configuration suitable for different types of machining.

The 5-axis machining process is also very similar to the 3-axis CNC machining process. However, it has some very important features that provide these two extra axes and more cutting flexibility. In a five-axis machining center, the spindle and tool move along three axes. However, there are other rotations around the X-axis (called the A-axis), the Y-axis (called the B-axis), and the Z-axis (called the C-axis). Five-axis machining centers can use any two of these rotary axes, depending on their configuration.

The five-axis machining center consists of the following parts:

Basic components: large pieces such as beds, columns, and workbenches are the basic components in the structure. These large parts, from cast iron to welded steel structures, are subjected to static and cutting loads during machining, so they must have high static and dynamic stiffness, as well as mass and volume components.

Spindle assembly: Spindle assembly includes headstock, spindle motor, spindle and spindle bearings. The start, stop and other actions and rotation speed of the spindle are controlled by the numerical control system, and the cutting is performed by the tool installed on the spindle. The spindle part is the power output part of the cutting process and is the key part. The quality of its structure has a great impact on performance.

Numerical control system: The numerical control system is composed of numerical control device, programmable controller, servo drive device and motor, etc. It is the center of executing sequence control actions and controlling the processing process.

Automatic Tool Changer (ATC): A significant difference from general purpose machines is the ability to machine parts in multiple operations. There is a set of automatic tool changer.

The A-axis is a roller cam, which is more rigid than conventional worm gears. The four-point rolling contact surfaces on both sides constrain each other, the backlash between the roller bearing and the cam is extremely low, the machining accuracy is high, and the machined surface is fine.
